Privacy Policy
Last updated September 30, 2026
This site belongs to Plain Text Studio, LLC, a web development business run by Laura Birek in Glendale, California. This page explains what information the site collects when you visit, why, and what you can do about it. The short version: I use Google Analytics to see which pages people read, only with your permission where the law requires it, and I don’t sell or share anything for advertising.
What this site collects
Analytics. With your consent, this site uses Google Analytics to count visits and see which pages and projects people look at. Google Analytics sets two cookies (_ga and one starting with _ga_) that last up to two years and let it recognize a returning browser. It records things like the pages you view, roughly where you are (city or country level), your browser and device type, the site that sent you here, and which links you click, such as a project’s “Visit” link or an email link. Google Analytics doesn’t log or store IP addresses. I use these reports to understand which work people are interested in. Advertising features are turned off, and none of this data is used to show you ads.
Your consent choice. When you click “Allow” or “No thanks” on the cookie banner, your browser remembers the answer so it doesn’t ask on every page. That choice is stored in your browser’s local storage, stays on your device, and is never sent to me.
Email. If you email me, I’ll have your email address and whatever you write, and I use them to reply to you and to keep a record of our conversation. There are no contact forms on this site.
Server logs. Like nearly every website, this site’s host (SiteGround) keeps standard server logs, which include IP addresses, browser details, and the pages requested. These are used for security and troubleshooting and are kept for a limited time.
Fonts. The site’s typefaces are loaded from Google Fonts, which means your browser requests them from Google’s servers, and Google receives your IP address as part of that request. Google says it doesn’t use Google Fonts requests to build profiles or target ads.
How consent works here
If you’re in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom, or Switzerland, analytics stays off until you click “Allow.” Everywhere else, analytics is on by default and you can turn it off by clicking “No thanks.” Either way, you can change your mind at any time with the “Cookie settings” link at the bottom of any page. If you turn analytics off, the site also deletes the Google Analytics cookies it had already set.
You can also block cookies in your browser settings or install Google’s opt-out browser add-on.
Who else sees this information
- Google, which provides Google Analytics and Google Fonts. See Google’s privacy policy and how Google uses information from sites that use its services.
- SiteGround, which hosts the site.
I don’t sell your personal information, and I don’t share it with anyone for advertising. I’d only disclose it if the law required me to.
How long it’s kept
Google Analytics data is kept for 14 months and then deleted automatically. Emails are kept as long as they’re useful for our working relationship, and you can ask me to delete them.
Your rights
Depending on where you live, you may have the right to see the personal information I hold about you, correct it, delete it, or object to how it’s used. Residents of the EEA, UK, and Switzerland can also lodge a complaint with their local data protection authority. California residents have similar rights under California law. To make any of these requests, email hello@plaintextstudio.com. I’ll respond within 30 days.
Links to other sites
This site links to client projects and to my other sites. Those sites have their own privacy practices, and this policy doesn’t cover them.
Children
This site isn’t directed at children under 13, and I don’t knowingly collect information from them.
Changes
If the site starts collecting something new, I’ll update this page and the date at the top.
